31OctBest inventions of ‘08

True, 2008 isn’t quite over, but I guess TIME has declared it the appropriate, er.. time, to tell you what the top inventions of this year are. Perhaps it’s because I’ve always been a geek at heart and loved science, but I couldn’t help but keep clicking on the next one until I got through all the different inventions. Granted, some aren’t quite inventions in the conventional sense, but probably closer to a discovery or social movement. But regardless, I think it’s interesting to see things that match what, up until just a few years ago, would be considered science fiction. The top invention is a great example, as is the new prosthetic bionic hand, which looks eerily like the arm from Terminator.

If there’s a science geek in you, raise your Terminator arm and enjoy.

27OctInteresting post about outsourcing

Personally, I have to constantly explain to people who roll their eyes when I tell them that I used to work for a call center in India that the people who worked there weren’t stupid or didn’t understand the English language. It’s just that there was a lack of training from the top-down so that the company could get the most money possible instead of worrying about ‘customer service.’

This article also brings up other timely and important issues which I think are valuable to the debate, especially this one: “When people have a bad experience with a domestic firm, they rightly blame the firm, but if they have a had experience with an offshore firm, people are always quick to blame the country first. This is both irrational and unfair.”

Enjoy the read.

27OctKatie Couric asked ‘irrelevant’ questions

Sarah Palin has said that she was, “kind of annoyed,” by the questions that Katie Couric asked in the now-famous going-down-in-flames interview, because they were irrelevant to the state of national security and getting the economy back on track.

So what exactly DID Couric ask about? Here they are (from CNN):

The economy and national security, focusing in particular on the congressional bailout package, the mortgage crisis, John McCain’s record on regulation, the war in Afghanistan, hunting terrorists in Pakistan, Russia, Iran, Syria, Israel and the role of the United States in the world.

But don’t fret! She was completely fine when Couric finally DID ask her a question that she knew something about:

“But I think the one question that I answered that everyone could agree on, it maybe shows where my heart is… too is, she asked me this relevant question: What was my favorite movie? And I said ‘Hoosiers!’”

Everyone groan together, please.

22OctTerry Tate tells Sarah Palin what’s up

I have no idea how they did this video, but God bless special effects. In case you were wondering, ‘Drill baby drill’ was chanted at the Republican National Convention this year.

19OctSNL actually does funny these days!

In case you missed it, you have to see Palin’s visit to SNL this weekend– it was hilarious. While you’re on the site, you might want to check out the Mark Wahlberg impression by Andy Samberg because they reference it in the clip. And to top it all off, Amy Poehler doing an outstanding rap (with a cameo again from Palin) that was obviously written by Samberg. It has the same feel as Lazy Sunday and the Natalie Portman rap.

Enough links yet? Now stop wasting time and get back to work!

19OctAhhh.. I kinda dig IKEA

Sure sure, IKEA has a reputation for having furniture that will be useless in 6 months. And that’s fine, really. All I know is that I actually went there on Friday and found a desk, a file cabinet, and a chair and had it delivered for under $300. That’s pretty good, in my book. The desk itself was actually the cheapest (and easiest to build) of all three– it came up to a whopping $50.

It’s an interesting phenomenon, and I’m surprised they don’t have one in Oklahoma City ($5 says Mathis Brothers paid someone off). Basically, picking a table top, then whichever legs you want, and then dependent on your configuration, it costs more or less. Intriguing. I think this has really been the only time I’ve ever wanted to have a pickup truck instead of my Civic, so I could bypass the delivery fee. And it’s true of anyplace you want to go that isn’t a full-time furniture store where delivery is included (as part of the well-inflated price). Plus, do I really want to drag all this stuff upstairs myself? Not so much.

Anyway, it helps to have these things, and I’m thankful for them. Now it’s Sunday night and I think it’s time to go to bed for another week at work.

17OctMcCain and Obama joke around for a bit

Ah, finally some goodwill out of these campaigns. Obama and McCain were at a fundraiser and absolutely roasted each other (and themselves) for one night.

Kudos to both of them for being able to laugh at themselves.

15OctThe best thing to do right now is PANIC

Yep, even our great and accomplished leader George Bush has said so.

“My fellow Americans, the time for running aimlessly through streets while shrieking and waving our arms above our heads is now,” Bush said. “I understand that many of you are worried about your economic future and our situation overseas, and you have every right to be. Yet there is only one thing we as a nation can do in times like these: give up all hope and devolve into a lawless, post-apocalyptic, every-man-for-himself society.”

I’m so glad that I get all my daily news from The Onion.

15OctQuote of the Day

“Yeah I don’t really like parties, but whatever, Obama is clearly more presidential. And he is an accomplished poker player.”
-Jon, explaining what caused his vote to swing. Someone put this on a poster already.

11OctQuote of the Day

“Okay, let’s not have Michael Phelps never do anything on screen, unless he’s in the water…. I wanted to take all 8 of his gold medals away from him.”
-Vinni, referring to Michael Phelps’s hosting of SNL

07OctAhhhhh… finally.

Okay so I can’t quite say that I’m ‘fully’ set-up yet, but ya gotta understand– in Vinoj World, being away from the internet is an eternity. The odd thing is at work I HAVE internet, but I’m always so reticent to use it for anything other than ‘work’ sites because I don’t think it’s appropriate to constantly check your Facebook status, or write a blog post, or whatever. I mean if it’s on your lunch break, I guess it’s a bit more understandable, but still, your usage history is still being tracked, and who needs the extra headache?

Hence why I haven’t blogged in a while.

And although I may have a total reader count of…. less than 10, I feel it’s my duty to inform you all of that.

Anyway now I’ve got internet and TV. Although I had to go and actually buy a 19″ LCD TV yesterday. Lemme tell ya, nothing beats portability. But it is a bit humorous considering that my TV monitor is actually smaller than my iMac’s screen size (22″). But whatever. All that matters to me right now is that I have the possibility of watching shows– or more importantly– OU football.

My poor sister. She had the misfortune of having to actually describe OU plays to me over the phone. “Umm.. so like, Bradford’s doing well… he’s got 3 touchdowns–” “Yeah but how’s our secondary? The defense? And the offensive line? “Uhh… pretty good I think….”

And so forth.
And it couldn’t have come at a better time– this weekend is– you guessed it– OU v. Texas #1 vs. #5. Wow. I have to say that the Longhorns, even AT #5, seem to be rather under-appreciated, and this is said from a total Sooner fan. I want OU to win of course, but I certainly don’t want a blowout. (That would just mean that Texas was too highly ranked/the Big 12 doesn’t have any defenses/SEC is better/blah blah blah) No, I want a good, really tight game. A game where both coaches pull out all the stops as best they can. And whoever wins– yes, even Texas– I hope they get to the BCS National Championship game.

Dang. I’ve already written 360 words in just about 7 minutes after not blogging for so long. So let’s not do this again, shall we? Now… if I could only get a couch, a desk to put my computer on, and a TV stand, I think I’d be set… heheh
