30AprGearing up for the show

It’s almost here. The second run of our show The Original Last Wish Baby is going to be at Ranga Shankara, which is a much bigger and well-respected theater in Bangalore.

At first when we got back to rehearsals, I must admit that I too was tired. We had already had the adrenaline rush of performing in front of a live paying audience and then we were just back to… the rehearsal venue.

But the last two practices, we’ve been working by doing some improvisational exercises that I got from a really comprehensive improv website. It really got us to look at the basics of acting: listening, reacting, and pursuing your objective. (I know that was a bit acting-y, but look it up if you’d like on Wikipedia.

So anyway- we started doing the acting exercises and we noticed a huge leap in our rehearsals. There was more energy, more life, and we were even just trying out different things that we hadn’t considered before. This is the reason I love acting: it has the power to create entire people and worlds.

Okay, I’m out before I spew out too much philosophy.

27AprHave you seen a Bollywood movie lately?

My title might make you think that I’m going to talk to you about a Bollywood film…but I’m not. What I’m here to talk about is the kissing controversy between Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty. I have never been more embarrassed and shocked in my entire life. I say embarrassed because, here I am sitting in my office, miles away from my country in the U.S. and my colleague walks in and says, “So, did you read about the criminal kiss between Richard Gere and that Indian actress?” And I couldn’t help but wonder, what she must think of the Indian people. Is that how backward we really are?? It’s absolutely unbelievable and ridiculous to see how the events related to these harmless kisses played out. People were on the streets, burning posters and effigies, screaming, calling for an apology, filing a case and now an arrest warrant?? According to various media reports, people stated that the public display of affection was ‘vulgar’. Well, excuse me for saying this, but I think people don’t know the meaning of the word vulgar. They termed the kiss ‘obscene’. Infact, Judge Dinesh Gupta was quoted saying that the kiss “transgressed all limits of vulgarity and has the tendency to corrupt the society.” So, here’s my question to all those people who have had a problem and an issue with this simple act, especially Judge Dinesh Gupta; Have you seen a Bollywood movie lately? If this kiss is going to ‘corrupt’ our society, then I wonder what happens to us after we see all the crap that goes on, on celluloid. What does he and all the people who created such a ruckus have to say about Mallika Sherawat and Emran Hashmi going at each other in Murder; or Shashi Kapoor and Simi Grewal in this clip? And believe me, I can come up with a dozen other examples, but I think I’ve made my point! This outrageous behavior simply makes no goddamn sense!!

Also, aren’t we completely missing the big picture here? The two celebrities were out there at an HIV/AIDS awareness summit. According to statistics by UNAIDS/WHO here is some raw data:

Gender Cumulative AIDS cases
Male 88,245
Female 36,750
Total 124,995

According to the Indian National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) 5.21 million people were living with HIV in 2005. Also, this is only data that has been reported. Many a time people die and the virus hasn’t even been detected in them. The reason for their death is simply attributed to a disease such as tuberculosis. The Indian people have completely detracted from the main point; which is the big problem of AIDS that hounds almost every country in the world. The unnecessary focus on the kiss, just proves that our thinking is backward. It simply makes it highly embarrassing for us to face the zillion questions that our counterparts here in America have… “So, is it like illegal to hold hands with a man?” ; “Are girls and boys not allowed to date?”; “Can you not kiss your husband / wife on the street?” Don’t these people realize that we are living in the 21st century and it’s high time we stopped overreacting about stuff like this. Pardon me for saying so, but I truly think that the masses in our country need to do something more constructive with their time.

I have so much more to say, I can go on and on…but I guess it’s safe to stop here and wait for you guys to respond and let me know what you think.

27AprMy ex-girlfriend

So my ex-girlfriend wrote me today asking me to take her back. You might recognize her. I told her to scram, vamoose, and whatever else.

26AprAnd the curse continues.

I truly believe that I have a curse placed upon me. First, it was the eye infection in Goa. Then, I get the stomach problems in Bangalore, it abates for two days, and then comes BACK in full force this week. And THEN, just as it’s about to end, yesterday I find out I have a throat infection.

Today? I’m eating and a shard of chicken bone shoots into my tooth splitting it into two pieces, that are still lodged into my gum, along with the chicken bone. I have to see a dentist tomorrow.

My Split-in-two tooth

It’s the photo shop lady, I swear to God. She put some voodoo curse on me.

26AprAn introduction to Jyotsna

Hey all, I wanted to inform you that I’ll be asking a ‘guest columnist’ to write on here about whatever she feels like at the time. Her name’s Jyotsna and her next piece is on the Richard Gere/Shilpa Shetty controversy.

I asked her to write because she had some very thoughtful responses to the Virginia Tech post I wrote about a week back, and I think she shouldn’t be pushed to the back of the site but be brought to the front. Too bad I was sick for us to continue the battle for days and days more. Ah well.

So without further ado, whenever you’re ready, Jyotsna.

25AprYou awake?

Just making sure you’re awake after me going on and on about being sick, so I thought I’d add this picture of Bipasha Basu. Why? Because it’s my website, that’s why. She so totally came up to me and started hitting on me but I had to turn her down last week. She wasn’t my type.

Bipasha Basu. Yummy.

25AprI laughed today.

I know, you’re thinking, ‘That’s enough to warrant a post?’ But considering the last few hellish days I’ve spent tossing and turning in bed, groaning in intestinal cramps, headache and fatigue, a laugh is definitely worth writing home about. (Or writing a post on.)

First off the basics– no, I’m not all better. That’s the downside. But after the morons cut off the power again today at 2 pm and I was all of the above PLUS sweating non-stop, I decided I couldn’t get better just on my own- I needed to go to a hospital. So I did. I spent a few hours at a clinic, where they stuck an IV in me and replenished my fluids. The doctor told me to stick my tongue out, and went, “Yep, you’re dehydrated.”

There were three nurses trying to get a good vein where they could insert the needle, and they were all talking in a mixture of the three of the four main South Indian languages. Malayalam (which I speak), Tamil (which is similar), and Kannada (which I’ve started to understand because Apsi speaks it). It was mostly just “Ooh, no that won’t work. How about there… no that won’t work either.. how about there?” And then one of them, in Kannada, goes, “This is the problem with having fat patients- it’s hard to locate a vein.”

She didn’t think I understood her. I did. And I started cracking up.

All three looked up totally embarrassed and flustered. I just chuckled along, and told them it’s no problem, keep going.

Later, I was talking to Eleyah and I gave her the run down of what was going on. She goes, “Wow you must’ve lost a lot of weight, huh. I’m on a new vegetables and fruit diet.” And that is what I laughed at just before starting this post. I mean think of it, I’m in a whole world of pain, but right now what’s going through her head is how to lose weight. I can almost imagine her thinking, “I wonder if I can get food poisoning to lose weight! Yes, that’ll do it!”

Funny stuff. On another note, Vinni made a good point about editing comments that you’ve left. Say you’ve left a comment and you realized that you misspelled something? No problem- just become a registered user and you can edit to your heart’s delight. You can add italics, bold, whatever. Just click here for now; I’ll have to make a dedicated button for it somewhere on my site later.

23AprUgh. Sick AGAIN

I think I’m cursed. Or something. So remember how on Thursday/Friday I was dying from a stomach bug? (Yes, I said dying.) This morning I woke up, and the same thing AGAIN. What the hell??

I’m weak, can barely look at the screen, and 85% of the time I’m awake is spent in the bathroom. Uggggh. Apsi has banished me from eating anything but yogurt and rice. And all I can drink is either lightly sweetened lime juice or water. That’s it. Vinoj so…. ttiiiiiirrrred.

Update: So Apsi called the doctor for me today– I’m ordered to be in bed for at least two days, keep away from spicy/greasy food, and take a bunch more pills. According to him, it’s probably the same thing that got me sick a couple of months ago which pretty much crippled me- a protozoan infection. See, I can deal with body pain, cuts, bruises, broken bones, and the like. But gastric issues and runny noses are my kryptonite. Great. Boy am I suffering right now. I don’t think I’ve been this sick since I was a kid.

19AprAny students reading?

Hey, if there are any of my students reading this post, I’d like them to please check out this link about the Confederate flag.

In class I shared that the Confederate flag represented the South, which ultimately supported slavery and fought in the Civil War for it.

Well just a few days ago, a college football coach in South Carolina (this guy is very respected) said that the Confederate flag should not be adorning any part of South Carolina, including where Confederate soldiers died.

The writer (biased towards having the flag), is saying that the coach said this so that he can seem more likable to black recruits when he goes recruiting next season for his football team. Anyone have any thoughts?

19AprGoa pics are up!

Check out some of the fun Goa pics! We took over 400, but I just put up the really good ones.

19AprI’m sick. And also some words about Va. Tech

First off the simple stuff. I’m sick. I’m so sick in fact that I haven’t even been able to look at the screen for too long because I get nauseated. It’s a simple stomach bug, but this simple stomach bug has caused me to spew from both ends of my digestive tract for two days now. It’s not a pretty picture. Really. I feel a little bit better today, but I have to make sure to keep eating otherwise my energy drops extremely low.

Virginia Tech
You know, part of me wonders what I can say about this tragedy that hasn’t already been said in the news countless times. I was on MSNBC AOL News yesterday where apparently someone had posted a blog with two plays that the shooter had written. Granted, the writing style is a bit pedantic and elementary, but that’s not the point. You should be reading it for its content and the basic idea. Needless to say, the guy had a lot of anger.

One play has him talking about how old people (read: authority) need to be killed because it’s their responsibility to die and make way for the younger people already. All old people do is make life a pain in the ass for those younger. His words, not mine.

The next play is a bit more graphic and is about a stepfather trying to make peace with his stepson, but the stepson accuses him of molesting him and killing the boy’s father to sleep with the boy’s mom. Rather crude, but ultimately what happens is actually some compassion for the stepfather because of miscommunication. Miscommunication (if I read it correctly) is the theme of the play, and how others can twist your words.

In both plays, there’s the vein of miscommunication leading to one person being accepted by society and the other being seen as the villain, when in fact that person is the victim. And that sounds very telling of his life. Apparently he had made some overtures at some young women while at VTech, and they alerted the authorities on him. Imagine- you’re painfully shy, you finally muster up the courage to talk to a girl, and the girl calls the authorities because you’re “weird”. I’m not blaming the girls at all– they may have done what they felt was right; but I can see how this sort of rejection would be humiliating. EDIT: This, in a news article on MSNBC as to how he was mocked as a kid:

Once, in an English class, the teacher had the students read aloud and, when it was Cho’s turn, he just looked down in silence, Davids recalled in an interview with The Associated Press. Finally, after the teacher threatened to give him a failing grade for participation, Cho started to read in a strange, deep voice that sounded “like he had something in his mouth,” Davids said.

“As soon as he started reading, the whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, ‘Go back to China,’” Davids said.

Note that Cho was from South Korea and was a green card holder. Kids are cruel.

Although there’s not any way in which I would espouse violence, a person with that much anger built up for years may have felt that was his only option. When I read the plays and some comments regarding it, many people had the view, “Yeah well he’s fucking crazy what do you expect,” and some had the gall to write, “Wow I could write so much better than that.” Sad.

I think this idea of ostracizing those who are not similar to yourself is what I want to talk about in the screenplay that I’m working on. (Oh right, I hadn’t mentioned that yet– yes, I’m working on writing a movie.) The movie will be about how people with mental illnesses are seen as freaks and weirdos and how no, they’re not freaks and weirdos, they just have illnesses that many others don’t. No one goes around saying, “You’re WEIRD because you have diabetes,” so why say that to a person with schizophrenia?

Another thing is that we, as a society, are so much more conditioned to accept people with self-inflicted addictions (alcohol, heroin, cocaine) and support these people, but when it comes to mental illness, we just go, “WEIRD.” Just look at Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and their ilk. If we’re so accepting of them and say, “Good job! You went to rehab,” why not say, “You were depressed and went to a mental facility and got better. Good for you.”

And with that I’m out.

17AprGoa.

Wow. So I left for Goa on Thursday evening and got back Monday night. We were all incredibly tired after all we did and I just got to checking my emails this afternoon (RIGHT as the power went out..GRRRR) after finishing my last lesson with the last batch I’ll be teaching of American Culture. So this morning it wasn’t “Ahhh.. I’m back, I can relax and take a breather,” it was, “Wake up! You gotta go to work!” One of my students asked me today if their test scores would be up on Vinoj.com. Rrrrrrrright. Funny. ;)

There’s too much to write in a single post about Goa, so I’m going to create a separate page for it and include some of the great pictures we took. Oh yeah. And the seafood– YUM!

Out for now. Still tired… and have to head to rehearsal for our show occurring again on May 3rd and 4th. I totally hope I still remember my lines… gulp.

11AprI’m a bit of an asshole.

But thankfully, Vinod won’t hate me TOO much for doing this.

:)

On another note, in case you haven’t noticed, some of my pictures are up! So view away!

11AprSun = Mr. Crankypants Vinoj

I think I’ve made a slight discovery. Sunlight and heat make for a very cranky Vinoj. For example, right now, the most cranky and annoyed and even angry I get during the day is as I’m leaving for/on my way to work, and when I’m coming home from work. Both times there’s lots of traffic, but I think it’s the heat that gets to me. Plus, when you’re on a scooter, it’s not like you can blast up the air conditioning.

Today I got into another ‘fight’ with the security team at the place I’m teaching right now. I don’t get it, but this company feels like they need to have more security than the Pentagon and it’s annoying as hell. I had to write the serial number to my laptop down because they’re concerned I’m gonna be in there stealing their laptops. Then, I can’t take my cell phone in because it’s got a camera– fine whatever. But the thing is, right after that the lady says, “Okay now please write your phone number.” I was like, “What’s the point???! You have my phone!” “No sir, sorry you have to.” Well after 4 days already of taking shit from her day in and day out (she loves to come up with something new every day to annoy me), I said, “Fuck you, I’m not writing my phone number down; you can deal with it. I’m leaving.”

Another annoyance: That businesses (retail) in India don’t seem to understand that if you’re running a business, you should have change. You shouldn’t be begging each and every customer for them to haul around their change. And guess what, since ALL these businesses do it, No I *don’t* have change! Today I head to Subway and it’s 94 rupees or something. I give the guy 95 rupees, and he says, “Do you have 4 rupees change?” “No. I don’t.” He looks down. Apparently that was really confusing. “So.. you don’t have 4 rupees change?” “Listen, if I had 4 rupees change don’t you think I would have given it to you by now? Wouldn’t that make more sense instead of having to wait here?” I wanted to slap the guy AND his manager who thought nothing of it. I just left.

So anyway, it’s safe to say that I’m ready to leave India. It’s little things like this that have finally taken their toll on me, and I can’t handle it anymore. I’ll pull a Rambo and just shoot people. Maybe it’s time for Vinoj to take his happy pills again.

:P

10AprMore hits on Vinoj.com!

So I’ve noticed that since I’ve switched from beta.vinoj.com to Vinoj.com, there’ve been significantly more hits on the site. So what does that say about my family and friends? That they’re too lazy to type in ‘beta’ into the address bar? That it was harder to remember?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited that people are ‘chatting’ in one way or another to each other through the site, no matter what the post. The “thought of the day” post itself from a couple of days ago has received 7 or 8 comments already. Muy interessante.

And now I have to go to work. Grrr. I hate mornings. Thankfully for this American culture class, I was able to teach them most of their lessons pretty quickly and now I’m going to show them Night at the Museum as a … cultural movie. C’mon! It’s got Teddy Roosevelt, the Wild West, and other history stuff. That counts… right?

09AprFree Hugs

What if everyone went around giving free hugs like this guy? Wouldn’t the world be a slightly better place?

*note: too adorable for words; may cause cavities.

09AprNo, your cell phone isn’t going to crash the airplane.

“We can put a man on the moon — and let him chat with his friends in Houston for the whole trip. Surely, we can solve the problems associated with in-flight cell calls.”

Such ends a great article about the real reasons that cell phones are banned on airplanes. The last page especially makes some very good points that should be considered.

Curiouser and curiouser…

08AprAnd it’s done!

Not bad. So this is what I’ve done. I moved everything from beta.vinoj.com to this site, *and* was able to include all the posts from the old blogger account onto this one. So that means every post that I’ve written since 2003 is now on this site. Not too shabby, eh? That includes all the hilarious Amit ‘Quotes of the Day’ from when I first came to India and was working at Microsoft.

Of course, what’s *missing* right now are all the old pics that I had up, but most people weren’t looking at those anyway. I’ll be putting up some more links and perhaps a different design when I get some time, but I think it’s ironic that a web designer doesn’t have time to do his own website because he’s too busy doing everyone else’s. Physician heal thyself, or something.

And with that I’m out. Oh- Happy Easter!

05AprTHOUGHT for the day

“There are many things in life that are more important than money. And they all cost money.”
-Radio comedian Fred Allen

I’d like to know, do you think this is true? If so, to what extent? If not, what doesn’t require money but is more important than it? Leave a comment all you people who I know are reading (Josh, my mom, etc.) and don’t usually leave comments. This one’s your chance to talk back to me. I’ll post the best response up.

04AprQuote of the Day

03AprJesus Camp

I just finished watching a documentary, Jesus Camp. It was nominated for an Oscar in 2007, but lost out to (a deserving) An Inconvenient Truth. However, that doesn’t mean that this documentary was less of a film; the other one just happened to be a bit better tied together.

The documentary mostly follows a Jesus camp that takes place every year for kids. Basically, the kids go there, learn about Jesus, and dedicate their lives to God. Sounds admirable, perhaps even fun. But unfortunately, there are far darker issues at play.

First off, before I continue, I’m curious as to how evangelical Christians (or even fundamentalist Christians) would view this movie. As in, what would their thoughts be on the subject? Would they have a different outlook on it than I do and feel that everything that is covered in the documentary is right? I wonder how much my own prejudices ‘color’ the effect of this film.

To put it bluntly, what you basically see is fundamental Christianity brainwashing children to believe that there is a war coming, and they are the foot soldiers of this brave new fight. And although the idea of a ‘war’ isn’t new to religion, it makes pointed references at Islam, abortion, and other conservative political issues. And that’s the crux of the film; using religion to influence politics. America has long been a country of the separation of church and state, and it has worked well for it. However, according to the documentary, many fundamentalists believe that Bush is a ‘holy warrior’ sent by God to govern the country. A newfound zeal in Christianity in America is changing laws not just for Christians, but for everyone.

Now allow me to explain brainwashing a little bit, and the way in which it applies. First off, read this article about brainwashing if you have some time. The basic idea is, you break down the prisoner/victim by breaking down their sense of self and demolishing their own set of values. After this process is over, the brainwasher begins to ‘rebuild’ the victim according to his/her own views, and by praising them for how they can be saved by these new values. Sound familiar?

Well that’s exactly what’s espoused by many fundamentalist Christians. First they say, “You are a SINNER! God CONDEMNS your sin!” The person is heart-broken after hearing this for an extended period of time, and in the movie you see little 5 year olds confessing to sins that I can’t imagine would cause them to go to ‘hell’. “Now REPENT,” the pastor glowers. Kids — mere babes– are taught to speak in ‘tongues’ as if it was something that can be easily passed on from one person to the next. Now that the child has repented, “JESUS LOVES YOU and WANTS YOU.” Once again, the child is back in good graces, indoctrinated with the beliefs of the pastor. This time, they stick with it, because they don’t want to go to hell. (After all, that’s where all bad people go.)

To be honest, I watched this documentary and shook my head time and time again, feeling absolutely sorry for the children. They are precious and adorable, and it’s not the idea of Christianity itself that sickened me- I believe that there’s definitely a middle ground where you can raise a child Christian and open-minded- it’s the idea that these children were becoming slaves to an all-powerful ideal set forth by Evangelical Christians. It’s even more ironic that Ted Haggard) is in this film condemning homosexuality, just a few months before he was found to have had an extramarital affair with a man.

All in all, it’s definitely worth a watch. As I said, I’m curious as to how more right-wing leaning people would view this. But for my money, when a documentary causes me to think, it’s headed in the right direction.

02AprAlanis rules.

Alanis Morissette just did a cover of My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas and it’s AWESOME. Check it out on YouTube. Her coolness points totally just went up in my book.

01AprHappy April Fool’s Day!

I wasn’t exactly sure if it’s April Fool’s or April Fools’, one indicating one fool, and the other indicating multiple fools, but I went for the former. But don’t worry, I’m not pulling any pranks on this post.

Believe it or not, I just had 13-14 hours of sleep. Wow. I slept for about 2 hours from Friday to early Sunday morning (2 am), and I guess my body just said, “Dude. It’s time to sleep.” The usual problem with sleep these days however is that it’s too bloody hot. And yet, last night I came to my room and found that it was surprisingly cool. So I slipped into my comfy bed, and next thing I know, it’s 3 pm. I lazed around for an hour, and then finally got up. I feel so refreshed right now and I’m gonna take a shower to complete the feeling. Aaaaaahh.

On another note, Apsi’s coming back today from Bombay/Mumbai. I’m super excited because she’s been gone since Wednesday and I haven’t seen her since Monday. A part of me is a bit concerned however, because I can’t even begin to fathom what’ll happen when I leave India in a month and will only see her at Thanksgiving. That’s gonna be hard.

And with that, this short synopsis (wait, is that redundant? Aren’t all synopses supposed to be short?) is over. Take care.
